In 2024, the Karazin University Alumni, Faculty and Friends Association implemented a project to establish a "Debate Club" for secondary school students and higher education students in the Kharkiv region. The project was carried out from September to December 2024 and aimed to promote democratic culture, critical thinking, and the skills of reasoned public dialogue among young people.
The project’s objective was to create an environment where school and university students could learn to constructively defend their viewpoints, analyze socially significant issues, engage in public discussions, and participate in democratic processes through educational debate practices.
As part of the project, the methodology of the German-Ukrainian educational initiative "Youth Debates" ("Jugend debattiert international") was promoted and introduced among students of schools in Kharkiv and the Kharkiv region that are social partners of Karazin University, as well as among higher education students. The project team organized thematic meetings, discussions of current social issues, debate training sessions, public events, roundtable discussions, and joint initiatives aimed at strengthening the debate movement in the region.
Special attention was given to creating a platform for cooperation between schools, the university community, and young people across the Kharkiv region. The project contributed to the development of civic engagement, a culture of open dialogue, and support for youth initiatives in a frontline region.
The implementation of the Debate Club became an important step in strengthening the educational and civic environment of Karazin University and served as another example of supporting young people and democratic values under the conditions of war.
